An outdated family home is often a testament to its years of being lived in and loved - the backdrop to a lifetime’s worth of special moments. The owners of this home lived abroad for half of each year. When their daughter moved in to take care of the house, they realized it was time for a low-maintenance modern refresh that would suit the needs of all the household members, which now included a four-year-old and a one-year-old as well as the elderly parents. At the same time, they wanted to preserve the warmth and character that made this space their home.
The first order of business was to expand the kitchen. This was achieved by removing the family room and adding an extended island and peninsula which would serve as a buffet area for entertaining and hosting large family gatherings. To preserve the private spaces of the household members, a powder room was added to the ground floor so guests would not have to use the ground floor bedroom ensuite. The drop-in tub in the master ensuite was swapped out for a more modern freestanding tub, and a new shower with a built-in bench for Grandma and Grandpa was installed. And finally, an extended patio was added to allow the family to enjoy more outdoor living. Replacing the wooden handrails and spindles with modern glass railings was a nice touch. A cool colour palette coupled with new stainless steel appliances and contemporary tiles set off by a thoughtful lighting design balanced an updated look with the comfortable feel of home.
